Points A and B
...
Our path was still
golden and seemingly
littered with sovereigns
...
Though some
might just as well
have been leaves …
...

steps between trees …

The golden years. For some there may just golden days but gold is gold and never loses it's value as a treasure.
To look back on such wealth..... sigh!
... I am with you DA .. I think that is the reason I write .. as a sort of reference and aide memoire for my own autumn and golden years ........................................ yep, deep sigh & a hefty thank you sir 🙂
Trees, begin to blossom in Springtime, flourish in Summer, shed their adornments in Autumn, and bear the weight of snow in Winter. A life lived "between trees" can follow this same path of development.
Your poem reads like a fallen leaf, something shed to prepare for the colder season. There is a lot of symbolism in trees and leaves, and now, in the pathways beneath them. I sensed a lot of emotion in this poem. as though of a life changing. Life's " Point A and B" which we all follow often is strewn with too many "leaves." - Phil A
