Ascertaining Advent

Tune: Bristol

('Hark, the glad sound, the Saviour comes')

Matthew 24 v.27-31

********

For as lightning flashes from east

And shines e'en to the west

So shall coming of Jesus be

The Son of man is He

Wherever there a carcase be

There vultures gather, see

And after troubles in last days

Change in celestial ways

For sun shall be darkened, and moon

Light shall be dimmed, it soon

Stars fall from heaven, its powers

Be shaken in those hours

And then shall appear sure the sign

Of the Son of man fine

Sign in heaven, then all tribes mourn

For when they did Him scorn

Son of man comes in heaven's clouds

With power, great glory shrouds

And He shall send out His angels

Great sound of trumpet hails

Angels gather His chosen ones

They be His daughters, sons

Gathered from four winds, they be sure

Now with their Lord e'ermore

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.6.8.6. metre. Verse 2: Soon after Jesus' earthly days, the Romans destroyed Jerusalem. They had vultures (or eagles) on their banners. A commentary suggests this is as symbolic vultures/eagles converging on the 'corpse' of Jerusalem. It many be similar to 'bees swarming round a honey-pot'
