Seth

Jerry Reynolds

Stopping the truck to watch a sheath of cottonmouths cross the road.

Seth thought, “I could just run over this mess, but God probably didn’t

go the trouble to make anything he didn’t love so best let it be.”

new moon

drinks from lake

wisdom

As the snakes folded into the swamp on the other side of the road, Seth wondered,

“I suppose they are absolutely sure that, somehow, the catfish on that side are sweeter.”

Much like the fishermen he had seen on the lake casting in toward the shore and

folks on the shore casting out towards the boats.

Everybody convinced that somewhere else is better than here.

somebody fell out

of the silly tree and hit

each limb coming down

Moving on rifle rattling in the gun rack, a man on the radio saying how

God knows everything and we should hold hands and pray for guidance.

Seth thought, “Why would he be listening to what he already knows?”

“Sometimes it seems the earth is God's clutter land,

a collection of good starts and bad endings.”

he had two cameras

but was always pawning one

to release the other
