Valentine Verities

Tune: Crimond

('The Lord's my Shepherd')

Luke Chapter 15 parts

********

Jesus, you Friend of sinners be

They who turn to you, see

Shall find a welcome, acceptance

If true in repentance

Forgiveness in your love you give

That through you we may live

Eternal life, your salvation

Offered to each nation

There joy in heaven, one lost sheep

Found, returned, safe you keep

Or one lost coin sought and found

Thanks and praise do resound

And one human if prodigal

Gone own way, is lost all

Yet if return to Father, he

Or she shall received be

Not treated as slave, but as son

Or daughter true, each one

Rejoicing in heaven there be

O'er one lost, found now, see

At Valentine's, love remembered

Thoughts and affections shared

Faith, hope, and love do abide sure

Love the greatest e'ermore

His life he gave, Christ's example

Followed, Christ died for all

And rose again, heart, a symbol

Of love whole, perfect, full

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.6.8.6. metre. St Valentine a martyr c.270AD. This poem links Valentine's with a Sunday theme in some churches for today: 'Jesus the Friend of sinners'. This is the original, old version of the hymn. There is a more modern version of the hymn, thankfully just as good, and it has not ruined the original.

See the sheep family in the first verse of the video - ram, ewe, and lamb in the background.
