A republic, if you can keep it
02/14/2021

A republic, if you can keep it
No truer responsive wit
Giving power of democracy
To individuals, a constitutional gift

Words, laboriously crafted
Differences unfathomable
Multitudes of thoughts drafted
Before goals became achievable

Common aims took precedence
Appeasement, norm of the day
Marrying unholy alliances
Compromise, the ultimate way

Appeasement, compromise,
Essences to achieving final goals
Not born out of convenience
Necessitating moderate control

In the Now political environment
Extremism infused, herd mentality
Bowing to the presence of Lies
Trampling Truth, devoid of causality

Well written, and I do hope democracy will prevail!

Hope is all we have, but recent events are testing our resolve
      Thanks

Was USA ever a true democracy in anything other than just the word.?? When some people are 'less equal' than others it can hardly be a true democracy.
Anyhow, just as you state, it is a republic. A republic conning the world that it is a democracy.

Democracy, a grossly misunderstood term. At its best it is a reconciliation of at least 51% , meaning the remaining are always bitching.
True democracy, meaning all the citizens enjoy the same freedom, has never existed, and maybe USA has come the furthest on this journey.
It wasn’t long ago, and in our own lifetime, when colonization and monarchy were prevalent, and even the term democracy was forbidden.
Democracy, at best, is extremely fragile and requires constant vigilance, specially when those who live under its umbrella become complacent, allowing for extremists to ferment.
To be truly democratic, its citizenry needs to voice its participation.
        Thank you for your comments

... you raise a very interesting question and an important one at that ... well poemed too to boot ...

          Thank you, my friend

These issues are so complex. ‘Republic’ and ‘Democracy’ each have many potential definitions with subtle differences attached that they render themselves virtually useless in any debate.
The problem is, however clear enough and as well defined by you as any with the bonus of attractive versification. But its solution will not be solved by utilizing either of these as a banner under which to march.
Political activism, even if only engagement where possible in open debate, is one way to go. Hold our politicians (typically there are one or two good ‘uns) to account, not, definitely not just at the ballot box, and then think duty done.
Must stop now otherwise I don’t think I’d manage to…
As implied above, thanks for the verse.

Thank you for engaging. Appreciate your input

Democracy appears to be lost in our world, no matter how people deserve equality there are always those who think they are better and force their ideas on others.

dear Poet, how accessible you word your complex thoughts..
here is my redundant theory, its a freebie:
'so many finding driving our vehicles so easy,
so much so we're handed keys
to 'weapons of mass destruction' - at barely 16..
why? cause we're so used to looking out, in every direction - its ingrained into our very essence 'of self' from an early age..
later, at arrival some very few (and fewer with time) individuals, take a second to glimpse back
into 'that integral' internal space within our vehicles, to see all that dirt we've been driving - alongside..
meanwhile, as we head to get that essential fuel: we're murmuring our complaints
about all those other idiots, who can't drive - to save their lives...'
            L. B. Mek
