Cheap Soup

FredPeyer

As I get older

and live longer

and see more

and experience more

and screw up more

I should be able to

write more and use

all that experience

all that living

find inspiration and new ideas if I

rifle through all my suitcases

filled with my successes

filled with my loves

filled with my achievements

filled with my pains

filled with my disappointments

filled with my regrets

filled with my losses

but the more I search

the more I realize

it doesn’t matter anymore

my past is now irrelevant

some of it even ridiculous

to write about it would be

like a tired cook turning

yesterday’s gourmet meal

into today’s cheap soup

Inspiration comes and goes like the wind

    • FredPeyer

You are so right. Imagine if we could call on inspiration any time we wanted to. Wouldn't that be great?

    • AlitaOpal

Now, right now is all we have.. the past is irrelevant and the future a dream.. you have had much experience and much more to overwhelm you.. 🌹

      • FredPeyer

Thanks Alita, and as they say: Today is a gift, that's why it is called the 'presence'.

        • AlitaOpal

          Indeed 😊

I'm in the cheap seats and cheap soup suits me just fine.... I still have a few croutons left to provide more satisfaction.

A fun reflective read with a great buy line. Enjoyed it Fred.

          • FredPeyer

Thanks so much d a, after reading you comment I realized that I forgot the croutons! Ah well, since I am Swiss, I could always have thrown in some cheese!!!

          • Goldfinch60

Good words Fred, you and I have so many experiences stowed away that were once so important but many are now irrelevant. Some though are so important that we keep on writing about them.

            • FredPeyer

Thanks Andy, you are so right. I now know that some of our life experiences are worth writing about.

            • orchidee

Aww, you could write on 'I remember when.......', I'm sure!
Just as long as it's not like some old bore, who starts off with those dreaded words - then we all doze off to sleep! lol.

              • FredPeyer

Thanks orchie, yes, I start to tell my kids a story of my past and they finish it for me. Guess I told em one time too many...

              • Doggerel Dave

Thanks Fred. I wouldn't be on MPS if I didn't tell of my past experiences!
I can tell you from my past experiences on this site that It's sometimes pretty hard to write something and not upset/insult/offend someone here. So..... 🙂

                • FredPeyer

Thanks Dave, right on! If I learned anything over the many years it is to develop a thick skin. So I give you the official go ahead to write anything you want about me, be it good or bad.
No seriously, you do have a good point. As far as I am concerned, everybody can write anything they want. At least from my side there is no judgement. As they say, life is too short to drink cheap beer (cheap soup is OK though!).

                  • Doggerel Dave

Nah Fred - I'm too much of a gentleman. (Believe that and you'd believe anything!)

                  • L. B. Mek

oh, great ending - I imagine you first thinking of those last four lines and then everything being built on top, as always its the foundations that count most and that my friend, is what our past gifts us: our now, pillared by our yesteryear mistakes and achievements, nothing more - yet, nothing less..
a fun way you've chosen to structure your read, nicely done

                    • FredPeyer

Thanks for your insightful comment L.B.
There were only few times where the ending was the beginning of the poem. Most of the time I have an idea for the first one or two lines and then just go from there.

                    • Goddess of the Mist

Seems like often it's best to leave the past right where it is. Every day is a beautiful opportunity to start fresh, thankfully!

                    • FredPeyer

Mahalo G M! You are so right. One thing we need to be careful though is that when we are starting fresh, not to repeat the mistakes of the past.

                    • Neville

There is something frighteningly real here wrapped up in a poem .. Cheers ..

                      • FredPeyer

Thanks for reading, Neville. Some people live in the past, some use the past glories to hold up the now. But somehow I feel that the past is just like water under the bridge. Once it is gone it's gone! Better to concentrate on today and tomorrow!

                      • FredPeyer

Thanks Munro, good for you! That's the way to go!
