Inside the Belly of the Whale

Samer Amin

In the very heart of the compassionate heaven,

beneath the immense layers of dark water,

a heartrending scream is heard.

A piercing cry, imploring under the terrifying darkness,

of the distorted face of the stormy cloudy sky.

While the boundless immensity of the vast sea is growing darker and darker,

and the raging black waves are getting higher and more livid,

the terrified soul is still fighting desperately to catch its breath.

Tightly squeezed by an enormous squeezing force.

An immense compressive force, creating a hellish abode around this tormented supplicant,

and the agonized body is being flooded with unbearable fetid water.

Within the whale's belly, within the pitch-black darkness,

a tormented soul is showing great remorse for leaving his mission.

Inside the belly of the whale, inside the gruesome darkness,

the tormented soul is still clinging to the heaven's mercy.

Inside the belly of a whale, inside the alienating darkness,

the tormented soul is still in love with you.

Inside the belly of the whale, inside the stagnant water,

the trapped soul is still singing your praise.

Inside the belly of the whale, inside the watery grave, the quitter is finally answered.

Whoever begrudges the divine mercy, granted to the transgressors, will be denied mercy in the same manner,

and whenever the salt of the earth loses its function,

it cannot find a place but to be trampled upon by the feet of the others.

    Good write Samer. Jonah?
I'm doing series, selecting verses from the Minor Prophets. I admit I'm picking out the 'good bits'. The 'judgement bits' don't always make for joyful hymn-poems, but we can't ignore those bits. I could always do 'said' poems though, not for singing.

      Thank you so much!

Yes, it is about Jonah and his unimaginable plight inside the belly of a whale.

I hope I could read and listen to some of the verses that you have chosen about the Minor prophets.

I think it would be a great experience if I could hear these verses when you sing them in person.

Thanks Samer. Heehee, I talk myself out of it, saying I'm the world's worst singer - well, almost. A standing joke of mine. lol.

a 'timely' character depiction of Jonah's didactive tale, in that stream of consciousness style
admittedly a write rooted in your chosen faith, but still - I think this can be enjoyed devoid of theological interpretation..
an engaging read dear poet (though I did squint at demonic) forgive me, my open mindedness is a tad squeamish, lol

In fact, Jonah's story provides an example about how can “Tough Love” be extremely cruel on the surface, but internally, it was meant to teach our beloved ones a lesson and put them back on the right track.

In fact, I used the word "demonic" in order to emphasize the intimidating strategy that was used to make a new person out of Jonah.

Many thanks for your deep insightful feedback.
