You must write

thewayiwrite

You write because you need it to breathe,

because otherwise the thoughts and feelings would consume you and there would be nothing left but an empty shell.

You write because you gave your heart and soul away long ago,

you belong to the art of poetry and literature and storytelling and it has become your duty to give voice to those that are otherwise silent.

You write because without it you know there would be nothing left to live for,

without it you would be just like everyone else, there would be no special talent, no miraculous artwork, just an ordinary person.

You write because it brings freedom, because it gives you a retreat from the world and shows you the door to hidden realms of fantasy and love and hurt and passion and all you need to enter is a pen and paper.

You write because it is you and only you who can write so beautifully, only you that knows what you see and what it means to the rest of the world. Only you who sees the wonder in every rainbow and every death.

You write, dear poets, because you feel as if you owe something to the world. You write because someone, somewhere, gave you these words and you owe it to share them.

You must write and all that you are and all that you ever will be can be immortalised in the strokes of your pen and your voice will be heard throughout the centuries and someone, somewhere, one day, will find your words and it is then and only then that you will truly know why you write.

You write for the reader, my friends.

For the person who’s life you may save, for the souls you may touch,

even if it is only your own.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This was written in the space of five minutes. Five minutes to express what I wonder might be the most poignant message I have ever thought to share. Read it, then write, my friends. Write for me, write for you, write for them.

You said it well! It doesn't matter what you write, or how good you write, or how long you write, as long as you write!

    • thewayiwrite

I completely agree! Thank you for commenting

    • Goldfinch60

Totally agree, we must always write our words each day.

True . I think writing can be healing sometimes, on some level , especially if your expressing feelings which need speaking of .
But personally I do prefer writing about other things . Yes , write for yourself , write for the reader

      • thewayiwrite

Write whatever you feel like writing - that’s my motto!

      • Doggerel Dave

You speak for yourself - manifestly there are other motivations (though I doubt you'll find them admitted to very often on MPS).
Enjoyed and admired your words but (sceptical as ever) I find the 5 mins difficult to believe.

Most things I write take less that 10 minutes I’m afraid! If the words don’t just flow then I stop writing because it becomes forced; poetry to me should be effortless so I never force it or spend a long time over analysing my work - thank you for your comment though! I’m always happy to see you have commented and your words are always so constructive and complimentary so thank you for taking the time to do so

Cheers. Perhaps then you should continue the way you do, because if you did let your piece sit for a while and then go back to revise, polish, the result would become so bright that it would burn MPS down!
