Tune: Richmond
('Fill thou my life, O Lord my God')
Matthew 4 v.5-7
*********
In temptation devil did take
Jesus, to try to make
Him cast self down from Temple height
To do a showy sight
Was at Jerusalem, city
Holy, God's Temple, see
Set Him upon a pinnacle
Cast self down was the call
Devil did say to Him, If you
The Son of God be true
Yes, throw self down, it is written
God shall save from harm then
For He His angles charge shall give
You shall not die, but live
They shall keep you in their hands, so
Jump to safety below
Jesus said to him, It is writ
Not use as you befit
The Scriptures, to twist them to tempt
The Lord God, no contempt
Help us, Lord, your word not to use
For our ends, nor confuse
Them ourselves sole to satisfy
But with wisdom apply
