Sufferings Seen

Tune: St Hilda

('O happy band of pilgrims')

Hebrews 5 v.8-10

********

Lord Jesus, though meek and mild

Sinless and undefiled

Ever Son of God, yet you

Sufferings sure you know

Through them in obedience

You grew, always did sense

The way, will of your Father

His will you chose rather

Rather than you own will, sure

Then made perfect, mature

Became for us the author

Of salvation e'ermore

It salvation eternal

To all who on you call

To they who do obey you

You constant them renew

Help us, Christ, grow more like you

And through our sufferings do

Assist us, grant your strength, grace

For all in life we face

You forty days, forty nights

Temptations in your sights

In desert, yet a growth place

For future you would trace

You our high priest for ever

[You] Promise, [to] leave us never

Teach us in all things, for you

[Are] Our hope of heaven true

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 7.6.7.6. metre. Seeking to make something constructive and positive out of suffering. There is agreeing with the doctrine of it in our minds, and actually experiencing it in life. Aiming to match the two together.

You know orchie, it is so much easier to agree to something in our mind than to live through it.
Hey, I tried the desert thing....lasted only a day and a half! 🙂

Thanks Fred. We would die off, 40 days and nights without food. It does not say if there was water or not.

This is most embarrassing! If turning the sub-titles on (though the words are already on screen), the first line says: 'O happy bender'.
Woof! Stay off the gin, says Fido! lol.

Good poem. I liked the penultimate verse, especially.
