40

mrbleasdale

As my birthday is today, I begin to think.

That’s it’s time to swim and no longer sink

Life a forty now begins they say,

yet it’s so far from birth, closer to hitting the hay

I was told this at twenty and again at thirty

I guess I will know on this day they call Thursday

So as forty approaches i sit here and ponder

Can I pull off old as good a Jane Fonda

Lessons learnt but mistakes still made

As my waist line grows and hair line fades

A child inside yet a man on the out

40 years in still figuring life out.

But now I can see some sort of path

It’s no time for sorrow but to have a laugh

To laugh again and to enjoy my life

Start a new journey with much less strife

So here’s to being forty, raise your glass have a drink

It’s now time to swim and no longer sink

  • Comment from author about the poem: As I reach 40 today! I see very much a new chapter in my life. After some difficult years and a hard lady 12 months. I signed on to a new career yesterday just in time. Life presents us with some many opportunities but so much to come together at such a mark in my life. I am grateful

Good write and Happy Birthday wishes there Mr B!
I won't tell ya about someone moaning and saying: 'But I will be THIRTY soon. I'm getting old!' Oops! I just told ya! lol.

Ha ha thank you! To be honest I feel your pain at 30. That was more of a shock than 40. Once you get to 30 and still don’t feel old 40 isn’t too bad.... 50 though? Hell no

        Happy Birthday, B.
Bend some rules, fly in the face of convention, be one egg short of an omelet or just make some mischief.

At double that age, still figuring it all out.....
"Grow old dis-gracefully" - an old slogan worthwhile remembering as one of several goals....

            I will do thank you

May that new path you will now be travelling bring total fulfilment in your life, as it did to me when I was forty so many years ago.
Hope you had a Happy Birthday.

            Andy
