This Wonderful Game.

Goldfinch60

Passion!

It was played with such passion.

From end to end they ran

The oval ball in their hands,

The power of the tackles

Stopping the players.

The speed and skill of both sides

Showing what a wonderful game,

That rugby can be

When played with such passion,

The passion to win.

To me the score did not matter

It was the glory of the game that won,

And so at the end of this great game

There was one absolute winner

And that winner was Rugby Union.

This match showed me why,

Why I love watching this game,

This wonderful game.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I am a Rugby Fan and watch all the Rugby that is broadcast. The last two matches of the Six Nations has confirmed my feelings of the game and why I am so passionate about it, they were possibly two of the best matches that I have ever watched.

    Good write Gold.

  • Doggerel Dave

    I understand - I do understand, Andy.
But to the fairly uninitiated, the casual observer like me, then without understanding the subtleties (I'll never understand the offside rule in whatever code) then League (see our State of Origin, broadcast, I think, worldwide) is by far the most easily accessible, while Union appears as organised chaos.
Nevertheless your excitement and your passion shows through in your write - there can be nothing more to say.

Thank you Dave, yes the rules can be difficult to understand sometimes and recently the rules have been changed to try and make it safer for players (how the hell can you make it safe when you see how hard the tackles are in these modern times).
I enjoy both codes of rugby and have done for as long as i can remember. To show you how much of a rugby nut I am I have seen ALL the matches in the last two world cups, 48 matches in each one (only 45 in the last one in Japan where a hurricane got three cancelled) and am preparing for the next world cup in France in 2023.

So what do you need to be able to achieve this unbroken record? A dedicated cable TV channel and adjustments to your sleep patterns?
With respect Andy, I still don't quite get it - these games aren't exactly croquet. 🙂

        • Goldfinch60

It has always been shown on normal TV. And I record all the matches where necessary.

Not quite croquet but croquet can be a vicious game as well in a much more subtle way - croquet starts again today now that the Covid lockdown has been slightly eased from today.

Enthusiastic read, Gold. Even for a don't know anything about it like me.

worked at Twickenham and witnessed some of the greats of my generation, a sport that encapsulates humanity's innate capacity to tame and nurture our wild nature, for good than chaos..
            nice read Andy

              Thank you Mek, so true.
