A heart-piercing and well written account of how lads were led back then..The emphasis laid on going over despite what trench-tops had in store seers the mind Nev. - - - - war still lays demands that time cannot heal............... x
That one certainly does (butting into a conversation between you and Fay - the empathy between you two palpable; is it the West Country air?) capture the trenches neatly, Neville.
However, on review Neville, I realise that my comment above (intended as a 🙂 ) was somewhat inappropriate. Now since I don't believe in deletions (other than in the first five minutes) this is my mea culpa and apology instead. To Fay also.
Regards.
'The distance between
A hole in the ground and old blighty'..
'is the legacy bill: for a million ghosts, sacrificed
in a Single day - where most
had barely sprouted whiskers - on their fervent chins'...
(simply Brilliant! my friend)
may we never forget
this crimson soaked: receipt,
with each treasured breath
of the freedom, They: bequeathed...
These potent words got to my heart the first time Nev and now after this seconds they tear it open again. - - very true those lads were so often gun-fodder. Your empathy etches war's dreadful tragedy thru' each and every short line mon ami ............... x
Cannon fodder for old boy generals who'd still have had "the lads" dressed as redcoats if they had their way.... tradition you know, look at the regimental lists of heroes dontcha know..
Might as well be a deserter, at least you'll be shot in somewhere clean and they'll be able to identify your remains. Shell shock? shoot 'em.
