Many times in Tennessee
Before Alzheimer's crept in,
Most wonderful times for me
Was to listen to Mama sing.
To hear her say my name,
To tenderly hold her hands,
To smother her with kisses,
And lay my head against hers.
Then she stopped singing
And stopped saying my name.
And I prayed to God & begged,
Please let me hear her sing again,
Please let me hear her say my name.
Once again please, once again
Before you take her home,
Please Lord, once again.
Let me hear her sing,
Let me hear her say my name.
And you didn’t disappoint me
I was granted to hear her sing,
To hear her say my name again
Thank you, Lord, once again
I heard her sing again,
I heard her say my name.

- Comment from author about the poem: I read something my dear sister in Christ wrote about her mom when she had Alzheimer's. "Listening to her sing and Hold her hands, Smother her with kisses Lay my head on her head," "And listen to her say my name." I found this so amazing that I thought it would make a great poem.

My adoptive mother passed from Alzheimer's, and now my adoptive father is in the late stages of it. Horrible disease and the effect it has on family. But we are drawn closer to loved ones in these times. Wonderful write here. ; ) AP.
This has created feelings in me as well RR, my wife sang all her life but she fell under dementia's evil spell and passed from it 16 months ago - I only hear her sing in my dreams.

purposed used of repetition to evoke such an eerie feel, of tangible relatability,
a wonderfully crafted poem, such meaningfully poignant words

Thank you Roberto for putting this as a poem. I have “The Journey” that you also wrote for me … I translated it in English and along with my picture it sits on my bookcase reminding me how good God has been to me in my life’s journey.
