FREE TO PLEASE MYSELF

Andy Hunter

I watch them cross the street,
He smiled and kissed her cheek,
Somehow I stayed discreet,
Inside I was screaming.

They held hands as they walked,
Both smiling as they talked,
It’s time that he was caught,
Why should I feel this pain.

He denies he's met someone,
Says it's just a bit of fun,
Tells me that I'm the one,
I no longer believe him.

I cannot take this pain,
His lies are always the same,
Tells me that I'm to blame,
I can't live with his ego.

Things simply can't remain,
Something has gotta change,
Avoid the endless fights,
Can't take the sleepless nights,

Stories hard to believe,
It's time for him to leave,
I need some sanity,
Don't need more excuses.

And once more I saw
He'd never change his ways
He's so wrong  - Now gone
I never want to see him

It's better on my own,
Switched off my mobile phone,
Enjoy my peaceful home,
I need some time alone.

Can do just what I please,
Exactly when I need,
With no one else to please,
No more feelings of doubt.

Restored my mental health,
He's now with someone else,
And I am now content
And free to please myself.

  • Comment from author about the poem: Not my usual subject for a poem, however I thought this up as a prequal to the Blind Date poem which sparked a number of ideas.\r\nTis story is told from the aggrieved girls point of view. \r\n\r\nThis lonely soul was on her own a for long time following this mistaken fling with a philanderer...hence the blind date poem was created as a result.
