The Graveyard at Sea

Accidental Poet

For thousands of years

Man has sailed upon the sea

From fisherman to explorers

In search of their bounty

Out on the seas

There’s a lady that sings

The song of a temptress

All sailors heed the calling

The smell of salt in the air

How the Sun rises and falls

On the horizon waves

Still, they follow the sirens call

The ships captain commands the wheel

Though danger at every turn

His inner fire of conquest

Eternally it burns

As the stormy waves

 Become monsters in the night

The safety of land

Nowhere in sight

With desperate prayers

Of captain and crew

To see their families again

More birthdays too

Out there on oceans of peril

Where destiny rolls the dice

Between life and death

The ultimate sacrifice

And should your luck run out

You’ll be in good company

As your family stares out to

The graveyard at sea

Thanks for your poem and reminder of and background to the movie ‘The Perfect Storm’, AP. A rich picture you paint of the experience at sea.
Have strong memory (and coming from me this is an aberration) of the hymn, known popularly as ‘For those in peril on the sea’ not it’s proper title, I think. However,

I’m sure you would know it.

I did find it on youtube, but I've never heard it before. But the video shows of how powerful the waves can be. Thanks for the read and comment Dave. ; )

Superb words AP, and so very true in so many circumstances.

Thanks Andy. The ocean can be very bipolar at times.

        'His inner fire of conquest
        Eternally it burns

        As the stormy waves
        Become monsters in the night'..
        these lines remind me of:
        'Life's a voyage
        that's homeward bound.'
        by the great Herman Melville
of voyages upon oceans, you both write
        where destinations
are the fulfilment of our lives: dreamed wishes...
        wonderfully worded and carefully contextualised
a great read, thanks for sharing dear poet

Thank you LB. Any voyage out on the sea can be very dangerous.
