land of vended broken heart

Jon Nakapalau

my friend charlie has lost his vending business

too many companies with empty cafeterias
too many bills to pay

he calls all his friends over
and he tells us to take what we want

piles of chips candy and gum
nuts jerky and gummies

he sits on his couch and smiles sadly
take anything you want

this all i have left
hope you can use some of it

as you celebrate memorial day.

What a portrait! Your little vignette is poignant in its simplicity and specificity. We can hear the crinkle of the bags of chips and jerky, see the sad smile... we love Charlie and we don't even know him!

In these Strange Times so many small (and large) are losing out and it such a shame.
