days of the lost past

dusk arising

Echos of another time
come and go.
They rattle round
like a string of pearls
from yesteryear.

And those shocks
from a lifetime I must have
lived before,
called deja-vu.
Are footsteps on my grave.

Recollections of
childhood adventure,
satisfying achievements.
Reminiscences
of loving partners.

Reliving dreamscapes
where fantasy entertained
my sleeping mind
whilst semi-lucid
control advanced.

Memories, our very own
personal treasures.
things held dearly
lost so easily into
the dreaded alzheimers.

The days ahead
for so many of us?
Days of the lost past?
Surrounded by those loving
vaguely familiar strangers?

You pen them so well those invaluable memories dear Dusk - the past comes alive so often in memory's mind.

Your lucky if you have a “ lot “ of good memories . Some people have negative ones .

      A good poem , dusk arising .

I guess it would be difficult to havd good memories to then forget them ..,

From what i have seen altzheimers sufferers are oblivious to the loss of memories.

Alzheimer’s- the robbed know not what’s gradually been stolen, but science is working hard to at least define, arrest and even reverse the cause.
It was one of the segments on 60 Minutes programs yesterday..

Thank you for your comment. Perhaps more awareness will lead the way forward to revention.

I enjoy all your poems, but this one especially so. So many people I know and have known have suffered this scourge.

Thank you for your kind words. Yes it does seem to be becoming more prevalent, it's a worry for us all now.

A bittersweet exploration of memory and its loss. The past lives on only in our memories, and you highlight the fragility of those memories so poignantly.

            • dusk arising

Thank you so much. I wonder what would our older years be like without the gems of memory we are all enriched with.

Those times passed are so important to us all. I went out to dinner last night with a friend (first time I have eaten out for many months0 and he and I were talking about memories of the passed.

              Wonderful memories d a.

I thought of you as I posted this piece because i know it is a very personal subject with you. I strongly hope neither of us become surrounded by vaguely familiar strangers as this illness takes a hold on us.

                  this is really impressive!
a depiction and commentary, intertwined seamlessly
on a subject, that's so hard to fathom..
a great write, executed with practiced skill
                  showcasing, that innate Poetic gift..
                  thanks for sharing Dusk

these words of yours are so deserving of each of the positive comments made by every single one of my NINE reviewing predecessors ... I dunno how I managed to miss them before now ... glad I got here in the end though and happy to make up the number that coincides with the mark I would be inclined to award out of 10 .....

Here's hoping others will now follow in my wake ....

Whereas it's always pleasing to get a positive response I'm not too concerned about the number of comments any piece will collect. That would make poetry competitive and as a fine poet yourself I hope you'd agree that poetry is rather an expression of emotion which needs to be outed by the writer. I have seen and heard numbskulls insisting that one piece of art or artist is 'better' or the 'best' when all along we know - it is all in the eye or ear of the beholder.
Thank you for your well received words Neville.
