Blackest Heart

Jabberwocky

Sitting easy in my chair

Alone with just my books

Happy now that you’re not there

For all of your soft looks

You showed me who I hadn’t been

And what was never true

And all deceit and lying mean

When loving such as you.

You showed me how appealing grace

Can signify just art

And underneath a pleasing face

Can lie the blackest heart.

You taught me how the stars and moon

Remain fixed in the sky

No matter how o’er sweet your tune

That ‘fore me they would lie.

You taught me how times common tides

Can wash away at rock

And leave but sand upon all sides

Hard promises to mock.

Sometimes it is a fools mistake

To judge books by their covers

But not so bad for pities sake

As doing so with false lovers.

I turn the pages easily

And read without a care

There is no shadow over me

Now that you’re not there.
