Black December

Saxon Crow

T'was on a night in black December
Of this tale i do remember
    Sleeping in a fitful slumber
    While nightmares ruled unencumbered
I woke so sudden i knew not why
Until i heard a chilling cry
So cold the call I lay frozen still
My living corpse i could not feel
And then again i heard that sound
    Of suffering, what dreadful moan
    With courage unknown possessed
Turned I my fearful statued head
To see where upon this noise had come
But of ghostly demons I saw none
"A dream" thought I with blessed relief
    Nothing more, nothing less
But to my horror I felt upon
My bed did something silent crawl
It stole my voice, my will to act
And closer moved to where i was at
"Who are you?" i screamed in whispers
    Praying my question left unanswered
My heart was clear within my throat
    Beating loudly at its approach
A hiss issued from this unseen thing
I felt its breath upon my skin
Closer still it moved to me
While terror would not set me free
A lonely tear escaped my eye
For surely i knew that i would die
Upon this bed in black December
Dead i'd be, my head dismembered
Then with surety of my fate now known
My fearful chains did seem all broke
Too late alas before i moved
I felt a hand upon my throat
Squeezing tight this grip of death
This unnatural thing did steal my breath
And all i knew before i died
Was that i would never know the why
Darkness was all that i could see
And all that there would ever be
And as i fell to my coffin bed
I awoke to find I'd bumped my head
And so it seems i was here before
"Is this real?" i dared to hope
Around my neck there was no sign
Of fettered hand to end my time
And so i could finally rise
To know that i was now alive
But impetuous i had always been
Because upon the floor i did see
A man who I had known so well
With blood pooling like a wishing well
And so ends this tale I do remember
Of how i died in black December

You was saving up those words. How much do they cost? Can I buy them in packs of 100 words?!

      • Fay Slimm.

Brilliant rhyming and after Poe's style this dark write should come a close second to The Raven methinks.

Thanks Fay. But i think Poe can rest silently in his grave!

your first lines made me recall:
'Remember, remember, the fifth of November,
            Gunpowder, treason and plot!'..
how poetically, if somewhat morosely: apt, I thought
when reading your last few lines... lol
            thanks for sharing, dear poet

I can hear Vincent Price reciting this in his chilling passion. Excellent Sax. ; )

Oh yes, a delicious spook. That was a really enjoyable read. You kept the suspension going very well and it's quite a long piece.
                  Excellent.

No matter from where the inspiration comes, you have earnestly crafted a superb poem, for its not enough to just read it once.
