Shepherd of the Sheep

Tune: Divine Mysteries

('Sweet Sacrament divine')

Psalm 23 v.1-4

*********

The LORD is my Shepherd

He listened to me, heard

I shall not want, for He

My sure provider be

He leads me over hill and dale

And too over each mount and vale

Secure, part of His fold

His shall His sheep still hold

He makes me to lie down

In green pastures, not brown

Pastures, tender grass green

Lush fields here are seen

He leads me beside still waters

Waters of rest, he me assures

Of His presence, by grace

I view the Shepherd's face

He restores my soul, He

Leads me in the paths, see

Of righteousness, it for

His name's sake evermore

Paths good and right, not dangerous

His compassion, care unto us

Help us to follow on

Good Shepherd, God's onw Son

Though I walk through valley

Of shadow death, He

Is with me, I will fear

No evil, He is near

His rod and staff does me comfort

The sheep gone astray he has sought

Solace and strength He brings

To Him creation sings

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 6.6.6. 8.8.6.6. metre. The rod can 'comfort' (verse 4) by prodding us on, and the staff as a crook to encourage us forward. I have compiled this with some Bible margin references, adding in similar or extra words.

There's a verse in the hymn (maybe not included here), that goes something like:
'We tell in you ear, O Lord / Our woeful tale of misery'. Doh! So they heard me sing. lol.

Baaaaa! Many have been led over the hill with that story. I do believe that once on the other side of that hill they hand out reality blinkers.

          Oops, thanks dusk.

I thought this had a familiar ring to it ... for a moment I thought it might be the Avon lady ... 🙂
