Car Talk

Langton

Two cars stood shiny and new

one in red the other in blue

one fast, sporty and red

the other electric instead

Sporty red car said......

Liquid fossils are found

deep beneath the ground

their spirit I thank

to fill up my tank

Blue car replied......

Windmills at sea

generate power for me

electricity by the kilowatt hour

my battery to empower

Sporty red car said......

By cylinder, piston, rod and crank

fuel is sucked from my tank

it ignites with an exhausting sound

my crank rotates round and round

Blue car replied......

Those invisible scamps

volts and amps

make my rotary action

by magnetic attraction

Sporty red car said......

There are six gears in my box

synchromesh avoids any blocks

my gear changes are very swift

made by electronic quick shift

Blue car replied......

A reduction gear is all I need

to achieve any speed

Sporty red car said......

My exhaust makes a pleasant sound

for which the car is renowned

my exhaust has a pleasant hue

a nice shade of particulate blue

Blue car replied......

My exhaust does not exist

not even the faintest mist

Sporty red car said.......

I do not wish to be unkind

but on a long trip you'd be left behind

your kilowatt hours would show blank

I would have fuel left in my tank.

Blue car replied......

Blue is my colour to be seen

but I am also very green.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I was interested in the difference in internal combustion powered cars and electric ones. After finding out about them I thought it would be fun to write a poem about them. The only way I found it would work poetically, for me, was by creating a conversation between the cars. I added an aim that any technical issues should be concise and the descriptions poetic. Perhaps you can pick up on a difference in personality between the cars.

Being a mechanical high performance car guy, I'm naturally drawn to old school muscle cars, but I have to admit the new electric cars are very very fast. Excellent write here Langton. ; )

Thanks for your comment. Enjoy your muscle cars while you can. You could have one converted to electric!

      • Accidental Poet

        I could, but I wouldn't. ; )

That's an easy fun way to make the argument digestible Langton.
Should be a rush on blue electric cars after that.....No, I mean it - like your style.

Thanks for you comment. The poem was intended simple to examine the differences in the means of propulsion. I won't be going electric soon, they are expensive for what they are.

Very true they are expensive - but time moves on and even recalcitrants will be forced to conform one day....

Very good write Langton, the times they are a'changing.

Many thanks for your comment and feedback. It is pleasing to me that you picked up on the 'personality'.
