Telephone Trepidation.

Goldfinch60

Hello I thought there must be a problem!

The telephone has rung

And it is only eight fifteen in the morning!

There are times when I think we get concerned

When the telephone rings,

Before nine o’clock in the morning,

Or after nine o’clock in the evening.

If people are ringing us at these times

There may be trouble ahead.

So I picked up the ‘phone with trepidation.

Yes it was urgent,

“Hello Andy, Bob here,

I am going to mow the croquet lawn about noon

Can you help me please”

Of course in this dire situation I had to help

So I replied,

“Yes I’ll be there, glad to help.”

Another tragedy solved

All through that telephone call

At a time that was worrying.

I have had phone calls at ridiculous oclock from gents with strong foreign accents trying to sell me something. So what do I do.... well it's only courteous to pretend to be interested for as long as i can isn't it..... what a waste of time they must find me.

    • Goldfinch60

My son does that, he pretends he is hard of hearing and keeps them on the 'phone for a long time. The other way is that when they ask for a particular person tell them you are just going to get them and then don't hang up but just put the 'phone down for a while.

Now I know this is hard to believe Andy, but these generous folks have found their way to the Antipodes in order to offer their wares, their investment strategies, but most common, a free service to rid my PC from a potent virus about to stage a takeover. Tried various responses, including 'wait a moment I must just turn the stove down a little....' But the best, equivalent to a straightforward 'off' is to tell them I just need to record this 'cos I'm old (shaky voice) and have short term memory loss...... gone and never said good bye....

Like that final idea Dave, I must give it a try.

Gosh, yes, what could be more important? Not many other things surely! heehee. Good write Gold.
Someone should have phoned me in 1066, at those times, to tell me not to turn up.

          • Goldfinch60

Indeed what could be more important Orchi.

Yes they did but you refused to answer!!

If only I had answered. It would have saved the day, and changed history!

I know that feeling .. it was always worse when on call ...

I say turn the conversation around and start your own sales pitch to them without giving them a chance to say anything. ; )

                A fun read, Andy.
I get them at lunch and dinner. My phone screens them and the LED window flashes the warning. Don't answer Hello use a three-line answer most will just cut off.

Long, long, long time I was advised that if the call is important, they will call again, but that hasn’t stopped me from immediately answering, with an impending sense of doom. Must be a loose wiring somewhere

                • Goldfinch60

That loose wiring is probably catching suresh.🤣
