A Cat Called Rabbit

Langton

I'm a domestic short hair tabby tom,

I carry myself with great aplomb

Rabbit is my given name

to my everlasting shame

A muscular hunting tom like me

should not suffer such indignity

the next hand reaching to stoke, I'll grab it

they will regret calling me Rabbit

The providers of my meals and place to doze

are Smelly Feet and Big Toes

when the providers call for me

I hide away in the shrubbery

There is an exotic lady cat next door

who I'd like to see some more

I'll call to her through the night

and woo her by a moon so bright

Providers couldn't stand my caterwauls

took me to the vet, who cut off my balls

my lady cat was not to be

she found a tom more wholesome than me

rabbit rabbit.

  • Comment from author about the poem: In my opinion some people give their pets inappropriate names. I thought I\\\'d write a poem about a cat with attitude who hates his name. Incidentally, my cat answers to any name and she is lovely.

Yes, this is a ‘well done’ piece of poetry. Brings out the reminiscent nostalgia in me too:
A friend acquired a cat (mentioned it elsewhere – so I won’t bore you). Called her Princess Something or Other.. Her brother who lives next door, a straight up and down kind of guy would have none of it, called her ‘Puss’, and Puss she remains. I’ve often wondered if, when called in one night, ‘Puss’ doesn’t bring half the cats in the neighborhood……

Thanks for your comment. It is nice to know someone else shares my thing about pets names

      Good write L.

Thanks for your comment. I hesitate to ask the names of the pets.

Thanks L. We have to keep names they were registered with at a Rescue Centre. They are brother and sister cats. The Tom is Mr Kiffing, or Mr K (as in Mr Kipling Cakes almost!). The Queen (lady cat) is Tampa (as In Florida).
