DIGITAL DEVOTION

PETERHARRISON

Will an e-mail give you pleasure,

Twenty years from now?

Make your heart beat faster,

When downloaded from the cloud.

All those texts you sent each other,

Long since vanished in the air.

Which held digital attachments,

Or photos, if you prefer.

All those memories are so fragile,

And once lost, are never found.

But there is a good alternative,

And it’s so simple; it will astound.

You will no longer need connection,

And so save that monthly fee.

No computer, printer or scanner.

It’s incredible; just wait and see.

The Victorians called them letters,

And you will only need four things.

A pen, some paper, an envelope,

And the pleasure that it brings.

Your connection fee is just a stamp,

Which are very easy to obtain,

And your attachment, a real photograph,

Can be included all the same.

The person that you send it too,

Will reread it in twenty years.

Not only will their heart beat faster,

Their eyes might fill with tears.

Although the paper may yellow,

And the ink will fade in time.

It’s something solid and very real,

And you’ll be proud to say ‘It’s mine’.

  • Comment from author about the poem: My poems are always inspired by things that have happened in my life. The other day I received a letter, not a text, not a mail, a real solid letter. The perpetrator of this amazing event had even used real turquoise ink! I turned it around and around in my hand. I was thrilled, I was fascinated. I opened it up carefully and unfolded the contents. It was a letter from my cousin. Unfortunately, it started badly, it was to notify me that his mobile phone had fallen in the Thames (which filled me with glee) and he was in the middle of moving and they had still not reconnected him. He finished with his new address and telephone number. Still, I will treasure this memory of the past. This event resulted in DIGITAL DEVOTION.

I found this very sobering. A posted letter certainly can be cherished in twenty years. How today's communications are nothing short of trivial. Well done for highlighting this loss in our lives.
