The Dolphin's Lament

Len Varley

Sing me your name and I in turn will sing you mine

Just as days gone by, when I would move timeless

And you in your laughter would follow

Sing me your name and I will sing you all this and more

Follow. Beyond the shallows,

Where fear holds limit over the cast of your line

Listen - do you hear? Do you dare?

My music begins, beyond the divide of breakers and wild surf

Where the hue of your heaven meets the blue of my sea

Freedom blue.

Let go the seeds of your doubt -

On carefully charted shores leave them scatter and blow

My music begins in deeper water

  • Comment from author about the poem: I was blessed to meet a captive bottlenose dolphin in Taiji, Japan who I spent several quiet and intimate hours with. This, I believe, is what she said to me.

Very impressive Len. What I always find so intriguing is the interaction between humans and Dolphins, Whales, Apes and other animals. That two or more species can try to understand each other is amazing.
