Hiding Beneath a Mask

Ajax (he/xe)

I hide under a mask

To make sure no one sees

The person I hide

The me inside of me

I put on a bright smile

To conceal my pain

But when I'm alone

I look at myself in shame

I won't open up

Afraid to be a bother

People expect me to be perfect and smart,

I hate to disappoint

But I'm not like that at all.

I'm just some stupid mistake

Far from a work of art.

  • Comment from author about the poem: Umm, so I feel like everyone has hid their emotions behind a smile at least once. It's easier than opening up and asking for help. It's easier than bothering people with your problems. I'm not too good at poetry yet so yeah- 😅

We all wear masks in different circumstances of our lives.

    Welcome to MPS.

Moving and charming. A universal emotion very well described. Brava.

personally, I feel none of us are 'a stupid mistake'
maybe, we've been made to feel that we are, but
that doesn't mean that, that's in actuality: what we are..
it takes a lot of humility to speak about the traits we all utilise to lie to ourselves, so that we can wear a mask 'For' the world,
when in actuality, we wear masks and disguises
    to 'blend-in'
hoping, we don't get singled out, and noticed
by the bad/scary strangers of the world
who we know can cause us so much suffering...
and there's no such thing as being 'good at poetry'
there's just different branches of poetry,
elitist, enraged, commercial, activist, didactive, artistic, private etc
    or simply personal,
and your writing style is definitely very personal,
    thanks for sharing

LB and Ron nailed it Depressed. It is exactly as they said it is. You're not a mistake. And neither is your poetry. Read enough poetry and you'll begin to find your own groove so to speak. 😉
