Memorial on The River

Jerry Reynolds

Grievers on a hillside,
Facing the Rappahannock
Pallbearers scatter solemnly
Her ashes among rose petals
Onto an outbound tide
Ashes away, mournful day
Beaches shoals an ocean await
Her final resting place left for
The river to decide

  • Comment from author about the poem: Penned this poem in Virginia after a memorial service for my sister, who died the first day of spring this year. She had chosen cremation and requested her ashes to be scattered on the Rappahannock River. Named for the Native Americans who lived there before European settlers took it from them. The pallbearers were me, my other sister, and my niece who scattered the rose petals my job was the ashes. My sister recited the poem “Invictus” by William Henley.

    Thanks, Teddy.

Your sad experience Jerry written here in the tenderest style is very heart-moving as a sister's last ashes would leave so much behind - memories will never fade when love paves the past. . May your dear family member rest now in peace.
