As you walk down the street
You see them put the tube to their lips
And a dense fog comes from their mouths.
So much more smoke but it is okay,
It is quite harmless,
So they say,
But there is so much smoke
That I get lost if following them!
And now the law is being changed,
Changed so that the health service
Can provide them on prescription.
So when in the future
You see these clouds of fog
Drifting from their mouths
The thought may come to you,
I paid for that!

- Comment from author about the poem: When I gave up smoking 39 years 2 weeks and 2 days ago, not that I am counting of course, there were none of these puffer things that are around now. I have just heard on the radio that these may be put on prescription now to aid people to give up smoking - who pays for the NHS - you and I do!

You seeing? Or you in a fog?!
I am seeing at the moment as I am still indoors.
Andy
I forget somewhat about smoking, until I see people gathered outdoors for smokes (not allowed indoors).
I was in traffic the first time i noticed a huge plume of smoke being exhaled from the car in front of me. Twas like a fog. They'll find it harmful sooner or later then we'll have to finance all the compensation claims.
Give 'em woodbines it's cheaper.
Of course they are going to find it harmful.
Yes I have smoked woodbines - back in the day. LOL

I forget how long ago it was I quit .. am so glad I did though .. nicotine is one of the most physically addictive substances on the planet .. to be honest, I feel sorry for anyone thus addicted & no doubt in time these so called vapes or whatever will prove harmful too .. I do so enjoy these observational poems Mr. Finch sir .. 🙂
Thank you for your very true comments Neville.
Seeing life and writing about it is part of me, thank you.

Congrats dear poet you left the wrong habit and it’s quite commendable to leave that
Smoking harms not only the self but others too
They say a family is destroyed upon a smoke
A cigarette is like a fire that eats the one who smokes
Well penned dear poet
It’s quite the topic that needs to be talked
Thank you spilleronsheet, very true words.
Andy
Strangely enough, the vapours are even worse, they disappear into their own fog. Glad I gave that up.
Very true Paul.

its a catch-22, kinda situation
as I understand it, either the NHS
Pays, to help prevent
the inevitable problems that come from a lifetime of smoking,
or it Pays, trying to heal
the usually Fatal, sickness
that smoking burdens its wards with..
it's a very slim line, but
I think, in this specific case
seeing people take advantage of the NHS, is worth putting-up with
when considering
the big picture, the new law is trying to achieve...
(or maybe I'm just another optimist fool,
but I can understand your frustrations completely Andy)
hope you have a smokeless weekend, my friend
Thank you Mek, I too hope to have a smokeless weekend.
Andy
I guess those electric ciggies will be found harmful before very long - loved the tone of your poem today dear Andy and agree with your view - strange part of health service eh ?.
Thank you Fay, yes I am sure that they will be found to be harmful soon, if you read Marie's reply it says that this is hte case.
