Wholesome Witness

orchidee

Tune: St Bees

('Hark, my soul, it is the Lord')

1 Peter 3 v.15-17

**********

Sanctify, do set apart

the Lord God here in your heart

Be ready always to give

Answer of the way you live

An answer to every one

Who asks you of Christ the Son

What the reason of the hope

In you, how through life you cope

Reply with meekness and fear

Godly awe, not terror here

And having a good conscience

You the Lord's presence do sense

That where they do speak evil

Of you, and false witness tell

As if evildoers you

Were, so they do accuse you

Seeking to distractions make

That you slippery paths take

They do sleight your good conduct

In Christ, truth they do deduct* (*ignore, disbelieve)

For it better if the will

Of God be so that you ill-

Suffer for well-doing than

For evil doing to man* (*mankind)

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 7.7.7.7. metre, with an apt Autumnal video, I think. Now footnotes! Verse 2 - not a lot rhymes with 'hope', but 'cope' does in this case. Verse 6 - lines 2 and 3 carry over: 'ill-suffer'.

It made me think of wholesome bread, wheat - some advert from ages ago. You getting wholesome diet? You getting your oats? Oops, I didn't mean......... swoon!

Call for me the disbeliever option (penultimate verse last line). But i only disbelieve the simple stories in the bible.... there has to be a creator of one type or another.... should we worship the bringer of famine though... your OMNIPOTENT god?

          Thanks dusk.
It sounds like a 'cop-out' - the reply that 'a lot of it is man's own doing', and others suffer directly or indirectly from certain people not distributing food equally. But it is so sometimes, I think.
I don't sense that you're a complete disbeliever, whether you 'deduct' some truth or not.
