their sunday habit

dusk arising

Slow slow morning comes alive
before October's meagre sunrise
permits once more the lazy
sunday ritual to begin.
Strange half alive beings
occupy pews of bigotry
with smug eyes of holiness.
Clasping tightly their status
worn of self agrandisement
to be seen, nay, shown - that
satisfaction may be gained.
Lord let me 'lord it' before
thine altar of achievement
where finery displays wealth
before pews of aspiring sheep.

When I went to church in my younger days in the last century I came to realise that many went to church just to be SEEN going to church.

I'm sure it's not everyone though. Some may go just as a 'Club', to meet friends, etc!
I'm not giving to rebuild a Church Centre that's not even 60 years old. Some have committed 11 years of financial giving to it. Gasp! (not a 'proper' big church with steeple).
I can't even give to Branson now. I gotta give it to this church. Doh!

Some habits are harder to break than others but I get your poetic drift mate and am happy to be carried along in its free flowing and furiously fast wake ..... N

    Wonderful dear poet
The way you described the holy ritual of every weekend
Though it lands only in letters and misses sometimes in spirit

  • Fay Slimm.

You capture the same habits that have dominated religion for centuries with this clever ensemble of ritual gatherings - bravo my friend for outing the reasons for many who attend these on-going Sundays.

It's a great little statement, dusk - paints a pretty accurate picture, from my experience and observation.
However I'd vote for live and let live, unless their belief and/or activity interferes with me in some way........
