Rest

James Alexander

In the night, silent, dark, frightened and alone

I awoke to visions of memories I have known.

Mind racing on things I dearly missed,

and troubling memories unable to resist.

Spring waters bubbling tunefully against rocks.

Shaded trees with the sound of singing in the tops.

The feeling of warm sun on long pleasant walks

and the pleasure of company and enjoyable talks.

Of the poor wretched souls of those long gone

and the dire deeds for which I should have atoned.

Of aging beauty that is no more, long past.

Of lovers and friendships that did not last.

And then among those visionary views

my mind rested on thoughts of you.

The finest woman I ever knew.

Beauty encapsulated tried and true.

Lover of nature, kind and pure of heart.

My greatest loss was when we had to part.

Of all of my thoughts yours are the best

and in thinking of you I am ready to rest.
