The Dream

James Alexander

A dream of you is all I ask;

my heart is full of gloom.

Could there be no simpler task

while in this barren room?

To place a kiss upon your brow

and breathe your fragrant hair,

to whisper a heartfelt vow

and explain how much I care.

A dream of you is all I ask

to take away this gloom.

Could there be no simpler task

to escape this lonely room?

If I could but dream a dream

of spending time with you

I would gladly stay asleep

and sleep my whole life thru.

I pray that a day will come

that I need not wish for sleep;

when loneliness is finally gone

and you are mine to keep.

A dream of you is all I ask

to relieve this feeling soon.

Could there be no simpler task

to avoid this fateful doom?

But to dream of a kiss

for want or a wish

is not as easy as it seems.
