When rooms are small

Too warm

Packed with wine and holiday good cheer

Family shuffles cheek to jowl

Like horses at the gate

Which when opened

Spurs them to the course

Jockeying for position

Loudest voices prevail

Above overwhelming din

The food eaten in excess

Declared success

Wine exuberantly downed

While one or two of us

Discretely eye the door

Take to the inside lane

Planning escape in our cloaks

Of insubstantialness

Hoping to flee

Before the coffee pours

I know, the idea of a good holiday is to send the family halfway around the world, wave them bye, bye, and then open the champagne and celebrate freedom. Though I do it reverse.

    • Lorna

      We love 'em but.......

    • Nicholas Browning

This is quite well said. Too much family can be, ugh, well you know

I would have faced this for the image alone but as usual such wonderful word play

My alone time is for everyone's safety Right? Yes I'll have some of that, today we are emptying Xmas boxes to make it Christmas and yes there is a lot of shouting. LoL πŸ˜… thank you Lorna, I can now get back to it with a smile.

      • Lorna

Keep calm and keep those ornaments coming. OK, I'll put up my tree today just to keep you company - or vice versa since I'm alone here..... you can mentally just come over for some quiet.

        • Teddy.15

Lorna seriously you have just put the merry back in my Xmas πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–

Get away from everybody and do what you want to do.... my kinda holiday.

          • Lorna

Is there something wrong with us?

          • Munro

I hate Holidays unless it’s in seclusion , Christmas family annoyance , a day if pretence
I dont see rarely , them
Fabricated enjoyment , to make shopkeepers and holiday firms money , give me peace and solitude lol

            • Lorna

One by one is the only way to say anything or hear what they have to say. Otherwise it's just Din! Din! Din!
              You Lazarushian-leather Gunga Din!

            • Robert Haigh

I love a good family get-together, but I wouldn't want one every week! I like time on my own - even away from my wife sometimes... lol! I'm not talking about separate holidays, just a few hours doing my own thing now and then. A poem I'm sure most people can relate to, Lorna!

Well company of more the merrier meant usually
But hooked to career and internet now keeps often a soul aloof in amidst so many people
And often in their questions one finds escaping to alone for freedom
              Well spoken dear poet
              Quite an emotion felt nowadays

            • SureshG

Do I have to, and then I do. I go through all the pretenses and do all the dances, while all the time wondering what were the chances…..

              …..love my solitude
