Weeping Wall

MendedFences27

Weeping Wall

Weeping Wall - you could have been tall

a majestic source of Nature.

But for this Weeping Wall, it was their call

to build a malignant source of terror.

Weeping Wall - the tears of millions

sadly cascaded down your face.

Oh Weeping Wall - hundreds would fall

and die, martyred in that place.

In the winter they ran and tried not to slip

racing towards your icy concrete face

but instead of climbing they lost their grip

and their bodies lay frozen in that “death Strip.”

Oh yes, visitors came and left words

such as “Eich bin ein Berliner!”

or “Mr. Gorbachev tear down this wall!"

But to no avail.

Yet every wall is born with two sins

to keep people out and to keep people in.

When a wall is used in the evil futility

of blocking another’s freedom or liberty

it is destined to fail

and the power of the human spirit did prevail.

Thus, that Weeping Wall did fall

to the hammer and the pick.

  • Comment from author about the poem: A weeping Wall is a geological formation of porous rock. In Spring and Summer water flows out of the rocks to form waterfalls. A Weeping Wall is also a small wall of rocks adjacent to a free form swimming pool. This adjunct and the water pumped through it creates a small waterfall and a pleasant mist. Weeping Wall is an instrumental piece of music composed and performed by David Bowie. It is available on U-tube. The video here is an adaptation created by a Bowie fan connecting the music to the construction and tragic history of the Berlin wall. It is also available on U-Tube It is this video and music that inspired me to write this poem.

  • Fay Slimm.

Those hammers and picks must have brought tears of deep pity for the many who climbed in vain Phil - your explanation of what a weeping wall means taught me of the porous nature of such walls so I see now that the Berlin Wall had caused and was soaked in the blood spilled by those who lost liberty - - so tragic --a most moving read my friend.

    it fell, mostly
    to the collective, Will
    of a generation
    that wanted to separate themselves
    from the morally bankrupt circumstance
that was, their enforced inheritance of Fate...
    and that's the symbolism
the Berlin Wall still has, for me
    a statement, to Testify
    'We' are Not: our situations
    and circumstances in life
    'We', have a choice
    however miniscule, in scale
to Choose: our path in life!
(a great theme, to your write
    and an especially poignant read
    in these most segregated
    of Time's,
    thanks for sharing, dear poet)
    Happy holidays
and a peaceful New year 🍻

Thank you L.B. Some situations require a greater spirit to overcome. Those behind the wall suffered greatly. Many attempted to escape, few ever did. Thanks again.

I suppose the next great wall, hopefully to topple, will be , North-South Korea.
