Tune: Dix

('As with gladness men of old')

Matthew 2 v.7-12

********

When Herod met with wise men

He did send them, and said then

To Bethlehem, go and see

Where the young child Jesus be

Search diligently, and when

You find Him, bring me word then

So that I may visit too

Offer Him worship, Him view

When they had heard the king, they

Left, to then seek Him that day

And, lo, the star which they saw

In the east still led them sure

Until it came to the place

Where the child was, even pace

Did it guide the wise men there

Then they in great joy did share

As they saw the star shining

To Christ-child's house did gifts bring

In the house they saw young child

Jesus, Saviour, loving, mild

With Nary His mother, then

They fell down as humble men

And worshipped Him, treasures gave

To Him who would mankind save

Gifts of gold and frankincense

And myrrh they gave to Him thence

God in a dream did them warn

Not tell Herod of new-born

But to go another way

Back to own country that day

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 7.7.7.7.7.7. metre. In the last verse, Jesus is a 'young child' by now, not really 'new-born'.
