The blues were being played,
The tune so well known
When suddenly a note was played wrong,
But it sounded good,
So another one was played
Then the beat was changed.
The tune was adapted
And a different world was found
As ragtime was born.
Then the tune was adapted,
Adapted in differing ways,
People wanted to dance
So swing came to the fore.
And people danced the night away
To those wonderful tunes
Studded with solos from the band.
One solo became a duet
Where the same notes were played
By trumpet and sax
At such speed and height,
So bebop became found
Where Dizzie and Bird
Sailed their notes into wonder.
Then came that time
Where the speed cooled
And cool jazz was found,
Where the players played
Played there music for relaxation
And it became my type of jazz.
Then came that time when jazz went wild,
And the sounds went wild
Some were good
But many misunderstood.
But jazz is there for all,
Especially for me,
Where jazz is part of my life,
When Chet plays his songs
And I am taken into another world.
There is so much,
So much jazz for me to enjoy
But the time to hear it all
Will never be enough,
That’s jazz.

- Comment from author about the poem: There is no such thing as playing a wrong note in jazz, it is the note that you felt needed playing at that time. Miles Davis said that the history of jazz can be said in four words, โLouis Armstrong. Charlie Parker.โ

According to Thelonius Monk a bum note was an adventure because it took you to improvisation places you would not have otherwise considered/explored. As an ad libber i most definitely agree with him.
Well, you know I'm a lover of a lot of jazz, modern jazz that is, and I've dipped my toe into most of the names..... but i do have a love of 50's mainstream post bebop jazz from across the water.
Good to see poetry about jazz here on mps.
Thank you d a. As you know I like all forms of jazz but I agree with you that I too love of 50s 'cool' jazz.

"If you want to find the truth in life, don't pass music by",I could swear I heard this in either a Animals song,or Eric Burden and War song. And this is one I think you'll very much enjoy,..maybe you've seen the movie? "Come,..fill the cup. In the fire of spring, her winter garment of repentance fling.
The bird of time has but a little ways to flutter,...and bird is on the wing."- Bird,1988. Directed by Clint Eastwood, starring Forrest Whittaker in the lead role. Great work here Andy p.s.,just remembered one,"Music can be a healer."-John Lee Hooker.๐ปโ๏ธ๐
