Our paths crossed
In a time lost
Your eyes caught mine
And I froze
The sickening thud will stay with me forever
I watched you stagger
Wished I could give you wings
Or suffer in your place
For I had trespassed into your world
Caused you harm
With a ton of wheeled steel
And you suffered
Just because you live free
Unfettered by the material world I inhabit
Forgive me
Your pain burned a lesson
In this dulled brain
Though I fear we are too lost to learn
Run free
Run
Run for me
Run from me

- Comment from author about the poem: Written after the car I was driving collided with a young deer on a winding road in the Lake District several years ago. It still upsets me now to think of it.

A well written piece about a sickening situation. I know how you feel, I have had similar with two badgers and one VERY close miss with a deer. It really is a sickening feeling and makes you feel hate and despising for what we have become, so far removed from ouyr beautiful wildlife.
Well done.
Thank you for your kind words....
The pain of causing any harm to a creature of indescribable beauty must lodge in the memory and my heart goes out to you Keith for no matter how long ago to look into the eyes of such suffering is never forgotten as your poetic lines show. Sad but so touchingly composed.
Many thanks, Fay for your comments....it means a lot coming from you.
Very sad emotive words Keith. The pain of causing harm to the natural world would live with me as well.
