I Remember...

rrodriguez

I REMEMBER…

A time children sledded down a hill,

when I brought my red second-hand sled;

the children playing on the glassy frozen pond

where they squealed in abandoned delight.

I REMEMBER…

The snow soundproofed their screams,

hearing snowplows sweep the streets.

Soundless snowflakes settling so softly,

the snowflakes on my tongue and face.

I REMEMBER…

The smokey cold smell of a fireplace lit,

the evergreen trees perfuming the scene.

The cold breeze painted my cheeks red,

the whispering wind going down the slope.

 I REMEMBER…

Up and down and up and down I trudged,

wonderful childhood days of a winter escape.

  • Comment from author about the poem: As I looked out the window today, I saw the snow slowly falling. It covered everything with the beautiful sparkling white blanket. I thought of a time in Bridgeport, Connecticut when I was a child playing in the snow and sledding down a hill. It was a wonderful time. I didn't have any electronic devices, just my childish exuberance. It was a wonderful time that lives in my memory.

Your poem comes to life with such wonderful visual imagery. As I read I'm back in childhood, a snow day from school, sledding down a hill just as you describe. I love the picture that you chose to accompany it, especially the pink coated child making a snow angel. It's all perfect!
