There’s a light
Perfect and bright
Shining somewhere
Deep down inside
There’s a bowl
Without a hole
Covering up
What was meant to show
Fear was a cage
That some rays escaped
But self preservation
Completely contained it
I saved myself
One moment of pain
By trusting no one
To keep my own peace
Now the bowl
has suffocated
That precious flame
That I kept shaded
I’m just a lamp
that lost its purpose
the bowl that stopped hurt
Choked out the blazes

- Comment from author about the poem: Have we allowed our negativity, pessimism, and distrust to become the bowl over our lamp? We want so badly to preserve ourselves from pain that we don’t allow people in. “If I don’t give you a chance to hurt me then I will not have to heal from it.” I’m supposed to be a light but I’m suffocated by self preservation. An open flame will flicker but sometimes blazes and may even go out completely occasionally and if it’s never re lit it stays burnt out without a purpose. Can we take a chance on getting hurt? You will absolutely get hurt sometimes and the lamp that is you will flicker until the pain subsides and grows from it back into a blaze. You may get blindsided and your flame could be blown right out but can be re lit. if you keep yourself safely under the protection of your bowl you may save yourself from broken people to an extent but your flame will eventually be suffocated and you will be in the dark separated from the world in distrust and bitterness. Meanwhile no one can get through the bowl to help you find that flame again On the other hand if you take the pain as it comes and grow from it and truly take those chances with people you will find that the times you don’t get hurt you will encounter all the things you longed for when you shut people out to protect yourself and you will burn brighter and harder than you knew you could! If you cry out for deeper intimacy with God but you find that your alone, in the dark, put out, spiritually dry and you refuse to accept that pain is a part of growth then you will continue to be stuck. God IS GOING TO USE PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE you shouldn’t fight it. Don’t stunt your growth to protect your heart but be refined by your challenges and enjoy letting the good things in with the bad! It is absolutely worth the pain!
