Ego

I have the sense

and so do you

It killed me slowly

Thought I could get along with it.

I was full of myself

I did not need anyone

I could not survive

Always suffered 

and struggled

 

I lived it up for ages

Did not realize that I was tortured 

It did not perish until I was reminded

that I had lived such an unhealthy life
