16... and still sane (A Little Handcrafted Paradise)

Rocky Lagou

My acne,

is a horrid reminder every time I wake up.

It's an irksome pest that hides my inner-beauty, with a layer of RED!

Yet, it's a part of who I am. It's a constellation on my face, each pimple a unique star.

My depression,

is like a downhearted Blue Jay - with amputated wings.

Yet, despite its physical setbacks, it marches each step -

with the same Freedom and Pride!

My loneliness,

is like an individual mirror, which only reflects me - me and me alone -

despite the crowd engulfing me. Yet, within this honed-in reflection,

I learn to cherish my own complexion - it allows me to love myself - despite the solitude.

Your attitude towards the world - dictates your outcome.

When life gives you Hell,

Make a little handcrafted Paradise!

  • Comment from author about the poem: I LITERALLY WROTE THIS AT 1 A.M. IN PITCH-BLACK DARKNESS. Idk why, but my inspirations like to slam into my head when I'm trying to fall asleep. Since I usually take about 1-3 hours to actually reach the subconscious state. But I KNEW I had to write this down before I forgot the next morning. So I CAREFULLY tip-toed to my desk and grabbed a little notebook that my cousin in Brazil gifted me. I SLOWLY opened a zipper pouch to get a pen. All of this was to avoid waking up my entire household. Then, I laid in my bed and in complete darkness I began to write, hoping it would be at least somewhat legible. This is the end product! 💖

Hey! Thanks so much! I'm really delighted you enjoyed the poem and I hope you felt the optimistic tone I was going for. Have a blessed day! 💖

      A fine write R.
Oohh, how did ya see in the dark?!
I reach the subconscious state 23 and half hours out of 24 per day. 'Tis when I sing! heehee.

Thank you so much Orchi! I'm glad you liked it. In short, I wrote each word down and sort of visualized in my head where each word was, it was difficult not to accidently write a word on top of another but I somehow managed it. I wish I could sleep as much as you, it takes me forever to actually fall asleep. Either way, have a great day! 💙

A wonderful read! I love the last line, words to live by. There is something magical in that middle of the night, or early morning inspiration.

        • Rocky Lagou

Thank you kindly! Those late night inspirations are truly a one-of-a-kind experience. They just "poof" into your brain. I'm really happy to see you could take something away from this poem, I wanted to share a little bit of optimism today! Have a good one!

A great message. If you can accept yourself with all your strong points and defects, changing them as you can you are better off than most . Wonderful

Thank you kindly! I feel that low self-esteem and poor self-image are becoming more and more common throughout society, especially the youth, and I really wanted to spread a message of positivity. That despite our supposed "lacks," we are worth more than we could ever imagine. Have a great day and thanks so much for your encouraging words! ✨

Great work here Rocky. I really love the last line,it’s so refreshing. I’m getting sick of the old “When life gives you lemon’s” scchpeel. When life gives you lemons,…squirt life in the eyes with it😂cheers 🍻🍀🕊🌞

            • Rocky Lagou

Straight up. That lemon cliché is getting tired. We have to find confidence in ourselves and I wanted to play with the cliché a little to get my message across. So thanks so much for your appreciation! Have a delightful day! ✨😁

Nice one- Rocky,we must always love ourselves before we can love others
I like to think that us poets breathe life into mere words, giving them meaning

              • Rocky Lagou

Yes, indeed. Our job as poets must be to blow each word into existence and rejuvenate it with our expression. And you said something very true, in order to give the gift of love, we must first find that comfort and love within ourselves , then we can spread it! Thanks for your comment and have a great day! 💖

i like that the last line in each stanza reflects the outcome you mention at the end. the positive. the topics you chose for each stanza are interesting as well and i like that by describing things we can't control, you emphasize what we have control over: our attitude.
i also am most creative at night. it is so beautiful when thoughts come to you like fireflies, keeping you awake.

                • Rocky Lagou

It is so delightful to see you fully grasped the message I was going for. Each final line is that "attitude" I mention at the end. It's that ability to see a face of pimples, and see a constellation. When we enter each situation of our lives with an optimistic mindset, we're bound for success. On the control you mentioned, I'll leave you with a quote from one of my favorite R&B artists, SZA, "I don’t have any control over what actually happens except for that I have full control over my will for myself, my intention, and why I’m there.” I follow those words as it is true, we can't dictate what happens, but, we can dictate our attitude to what happens. Thanks so much and have a wonderful day! 💖

This is absolutely wonderful! You describe your acne..each one like a star. (I wouldn't have described it that way at your age!) But it is fitting. And remember, it goes away! Your depression, you highlighted FREEDOM and PRIDE! Good for you! And I love that you made the ending a little handcrafted paradise. I wrote a poem on anxiety yesterday, hardly the piece you have here. Great job Rocky!

                  • Rocky Lagou

Thank you so much! I was hoping someone would spotlight the acne part a little and it's nice to see you enjoyed that optimistic way of perceiving it. Depression is also a destroying force but I feel that everyone has the ability to overcome it. Have a wonderful day!
