Am I fine?

Rosey

He asks how I am.

My automatic response?

I'm fine.

Is it lie?

I don't know.

Would I lie to myself?

Most probably.

Am I fine?

Probably not.

Conclusion?

I'm not okay and want him to know.

But, am I scared to tell him?

Yes.

At my age I now respond " Well I got up this morning so all is well".

My favourite response is: "I'm still alive aren't I?"

We do it though - we may not know the person well enough; not want to tell them why we may not be OK; not want to give them a blow-by-blow account; etc.
Some - maybe a few - we know more fully; feel we can confide in them; find life is bit better after, say, a cup of tea and a slice of cake together. I sound like Worzel Gummidge there. lol.
