Scarecrows Secret

Saxon Crow

What do you do standing all alone

When there's nothing else to do?

After scaring all the crows away

It's not as if you can move!

Because it can't be that much fun

Being strapped against a pole

Waiting to talk to any one

You must feel quite alone

When you see cars racing by

Or people walking down the lane

Does it make you want to shout out loud 'Hey shall we play a game?!'

And then there's the weather

You're in it every day

Well yes, I agree summer's alright

But then after autumn winter's on its way

It must get very lonely

And you never get any thanks

Farmer might come out occasionally

To maybe change your rags

But on the whole

It must be a depressing job

When all you get to do

Is to stare into oblivion

And hope the birds don't eat all the food

But now that I look at you

All scraggly and forlorn

There's a twinkle in your button eye

Reflected by the corn

The stitching in your sacky face

Forms a smile no one else can see

And if I'm not very much mistaken

I'm sure you just winked at me!

So now I'm left here pondering

What it is you actually know

That keeps you up here everyday

Through wind and rain and snow

Because to me you seem a contented chap

Not a thing to feel sorry for

As if this happy circumstance

Was something that you adore

So if you don't mind some company

Everyday for an hour or more

I'd like to come and stand next to you

I'll even bring a pole

And then maybe I can learn something

About why you stand at ease

And why this tiny bit of nature

Seems to bring you a sense of peace

I so enjoyed reading your poem! I've just been googling about scarecrows, do they really work, are crows fooled by them etc. Fascinating stuff.

    • Saxon Crow

Yeah. I wonder where the originated from?

      • Rozina

        1. Greek farmers, about 2500 B.C., carved ugly wooden scarecrows (in the image of Priapus, son of Dionysus and Aphrodite), to scare birds away from their vineyards.
        2. Another article said the first scarecrows in recorded history were made along the Nile River to protect wheat fields (they were made of wooden frames covered with nets and the farmers hid in the fields to scare the quails into the nets).
        Lots more interesting information.

A fine anthropomorphic write there SC.
Quite a long word there (lol), meaning 'giving human attributes to non-human things'.

            • Saxon Crow

Yeeeesssss I am aware of the word and yes it's far too long a nomenclature for this time of day!

So wonderful that a crow could appreciate a scarecrow. I think the scarecrow loves a life of watching the world around him and wondering if the world can appreciate him. You've done the scarecrow justice Sax. 😉

While your scarecrow may feel so very solitary, he is not encumbered by the worries of the world. There may be something to be said for having your head filled with straw, and a smile on your face. Does he know something we don"t? Such a fun read, thank you for a wink and a smile.

Thanks Bella glad you enjoyed it.

Wow, I never thought this deeply about scarecrows until today but it's true. They must feel a sense of loneliness but the way you conveyed this makes it seem like they're okay with their solitude. Maybe they live in peace. Wonderful poem.

                • Saxon Crow

Thanks Rocky. Clearly I've got too much time on my hands to think about these things lol
