Poetry is not cool,
it’s not as good as rap.
It’s only for old people,
and the rhymes are c**p.
But what is poetry,
if it is not rap?
What do you have to say to that!
The swearing and the dissing
may be what it is missing.
But without poetry,
rap wouldn’t be in its current position.
Maybe rap is just a poem
that’s a little more flowing.
Or a poem is rap
where the music’s gone flat.
But I firmly believe
we can’t separate it like that.
Rap is a poem,
and a poem is rap.

It made me smile and nod in agreement - though I can't do rap myself. I was suprised by saying rap wouldn' be in its current position without poetry. Perhaps I have misunderstood but I thought it was the other way round
Who came first, the poet or the rapper? I suspect it wasn’t the latter?! Though I agree with you, it could work both ways; rap helps poetry, poetry helps rap.
Fair enough.
I loved this.
I have my own notion of where the line between "songwriting" and "poetry" lands and it is the following:
Songs are only poems that follow a melody.
I agree with that 👍
