The Old Soldier

Paul Bell

The picture stared down at the old man
Good times, friends for life
The decomposing body was in its second year now
The dust and webs had cloaked him like a blanket
Giving him comfort that life denied him
Time ago, they would have classed him as a hero, time ago
The black van took him away
Eventually releasing the body for burning
The prayers were brief
His final epitaph came when the council cleared the house
The picture was the last to go in the skip
Glancing at it, the worker remarked to his colleague
Old soldier.

'The dust and webs had cloaked him like a blanket
Giving him comfort that life denied him
Time ago, they would have classed him as a hero, time ago'..
    these words
genuinely brought an unshed tear to my eye,
how you depict the kindness of nature
and how distressing it is, to realise
    so few
of those ww heroes are left
    and that we've, allowed them
    to pass
    without, earning
    their insight and wisdom
    insuring
    those future generations, to come
    will have to got through
    that same hell on earth
    to once again, gain access
    to what our brave heroes
    had ready
to reward us, had we consideration
    enough
to ask, to listen and heed...
    may they all, R. I . P.
and may karma, repay you tenfold
    for penning this Brilliant
    dedication!
    and giving voice
to those who earned us our freedom's
    volition
    with their crimson stained
    bravery of defiance
    in the name of goodness!

Yes, not many old heroes left.
Sad to think, we're onto new heroes.

This is such a touching and heartfelt poem. The Old Soldier whose life was one of duty and dignity. You've treated this so beautifully!

Thanks, Bella. Sad the way they treat our old boys.

People are starting not to care about anyone nowadays - such a shame.

I heard of people lying dead for years now, shocking.
