Through Thorny Troubles

Tune: Southwell

('Lord Jesus, think on me')

2 Corinthians 12 v.7-10

*********

If thorn in flesh you know

God may appoint it so

Though we may pray, full mind and heart

It may not full depart

But finding, as did Paul

God's grace therein it all

Finding that grace sufficient be

Imparted to us free

For the Lord's strength is made

Perfect in weakness, staid

Be your soul on Him, e'en glory

In each infirmity

So that Christ's power may

Rest on you each night, day

Through infirmities, reproaches

Distress, necessities

And in persecutions

As His true daughters, sons

All for Christ's sake, for when weak we

Are strong in Christ, we see

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 6.6.8.6. format. A book gave four chapters to Paul's 'thorn in the flesh'. It does not say what it was. There are hints of various things, including eye trouble.

You describe our earthly plight so well. Ours is not to reason why, but to bear and know we are not alone. Nicely done dear poet.
