Unsaid

Jason Jesko

We stand at the door and say our goodbye and you do your best to give me a smile

You turn down the stairs lingering still without the words you needed to hear

I close the door; delete your number, without your name will I still wonder

Every last fiber locked up and away; erasing the past to get through the day

But a ghost of a whisper of what you wish for and still we remember how it began

So we can’t leave it, continue to keep it, and the next week you’re back again

Then we unseal it, wreck it and ravish, and come Sunday morning you hold my hand

Staying this way as long as we can while you remember that once charming man

So stoically quiet with witty one-liners and bright hazel eyes that made you once smile

And so you wait, persistent and patient, craving the day when he might bend

Finally saying the words you wish to hear and what would it matter if he finally did?

Promises broken, even as they were spoken, and thus in the end best left wholly unsaid.
