Another Life Lesson (though I’m not quite sure…….)

Doggerel Dave

Notice of absence from Doggerel Dave
Not absent - still here!
Keep Calm and Carry On Poeming. 😂

It’s the eighties and a psych hospital;

Nursing Assistant – I made many beds.

Induction included restraint training -

Safety first – ignore delusional heads.

A position from behind the patient

And with arms held tightly against his chest:

Certainly easy in demonstration;

Now next time reality gets the test.

So an unavoidable incident -

The patient, a slight lad of teenage years,

Restrainable when snooker table balls

Became missiles, source of disruption and fears.

Instructions adhered to – arms pinned to chest;

Instantly followed by a somersault…..

Lucky landing on my back without pain,

While staff appeared and covered this default...

I slipped, I thought as I sat out of sight

And slowly restored shattered dignity.

However the patient found me next day;

He, to make amends with some charity

confided his brown belt in Aikido;

(And about which I subsequently read).

Vigorous handshake with apology

While he patted me consolingly on the head.

    Good fun, Dave.
    It happens really quickly.

      Thanks Jerry. Yes very quickly, otherwise I'd have known.

      Lucky you're not dead. Dave I enjoyed this poem I've worked psych hospitals and taken a few shots from patients. well done

        Thanks for that, Soren. I've had several moments in my life (Lucky You're not dead), but that was not one of them. Always felt safer in hospital , where the crazies are easily identified (and that's d just the staff......) than I do on the street.

        Interesting tale revealing the risks and dangers psych. personnel endure. Well, at least you weren't snookered. Nice write Dave. - Phil A.

        • Doggerel Dave

          Less dangerous than you would think, Phil (provided the place is well organised and the culture good).
          Safer there than some streets I've walked down.....
          Also fun and funny (as here) at times.

          they say pride comes before a fall .. but I guess there will always be the odd exception Dave ..

            Wow – the learnings I accrue as an armchair (emphasis on the ‘armchair’) connoisseur of martial arts by being a member of MPS is amazing!
            So very brief research into Shorinji Kempo, and I can detect (some) congruence in some styles of both this and Aikido, although I shall remain loyal to Aikido (from my armchair).
            Your Buddhist faith is in no way superficial, is it Nev?
