You Told Me

Nandawula Regine Kabali-Kagwa

You told me I was beautiful

When I was locked within my confinements of insecurities
But the river of your speech never correlated with your actions
An intention to break me... Entirely

You told me I was strong

A warrior when I conquered wars of my mind
But you alone were an opposition undefeated
Cold, heartless and furiously out of line

Bitter nights that you held me within the furnace of your embrace
Go by leaving its fading trail into the distance
Hoping to be forgotten and replaced

I cringe at the force of failure
To pull me up and be more of a slave than I already was
But I am broken puppet
The strings to control me have retired in defeat it couldn't endure

No freedom will ever greet me with open arms
Because I neglected it the moment I chose you
I chose you because I thought you were the way and I stayed
But you were a false compass leading me to dark ventures
And you watched... Unphased

There is no hope left to be served
Just a huge daily feast of regret and dispair
But every dose became my drug and that made him unnerved
But still his tales proceeded and he repeated...

You are beautiful
You are strong
